APPLE PICKING AT CARTER MOUNTAIN ORCHARD

Paresa Kouhestani

The biggest thing I've missed about being home in Colorado is driving through the mountains and seeing the Fall foliage! It's seriously so beautiful and I was excited to find Carter Mountain Orchard when I was Pinterest-ing for a good place to visit in Virginia during October!

It's a beautiful two hour drive from Washington, DC through tree-lined highways and cute towns. Pulling up to the orchard is completely different from any other orchard I've been to. The most amazing part--it's literally ON TOP of a mountain! Which means you get 360 degree views of Charlottesville and the orchard grounds.

I read about the apple cider donuts and fresh apple cider they always have and happily found they have a Bold Rock cidery on the grounds! I mean--how amazing is that?! The orchard also a pumpkin patch, more than five types of apples you can pick up right when you arrive or you can pick them yourself all over the property, and plenty of outdoor seating space with amazing views!

After enjoying our hot apple cider and donuts we went through the grounds to pick some apples ourselves and explore the area a bit! After we grabbed some apples, we went down to the Bold Rock cidery! They had several flavors on tab and a couple taster sets with five different flavors of cider including pear, peach, IPA and more for only $5!! Such an amazing deal, right?! I'm a huge fan of cider (thank you Europe trip 2013) and all the flavors were so crisp, fresh and delicious and made from the apples on site!

We went on a perfectly sunny day, but the winds were very strong which was a bummer. We also went on a weekend and there was definitely a larger crowd. If you can go sometime during the week to avoid crowds-- might be a good option. Another tip, WEAR BOOTS! I knew what orchards were like so I knew to wear my Hunter boots to avoid ruining my other shoes! Overall though it was amazing and I'm so glad I got to go! I would 100% recommend to anyone in the DC/Maryland/Virginia area (and 21+ for the Bold Rock cidery!). Cheers and enjoy!
